1. A potential major attack on Maiduguri, the Borno State
capital was on Wednesday averted, as troops successfully subdued insurgents’
attempts to take over the town through an area called “Cashew Plantation” which
is behind Giwa Barracks, the headquarters of the 7th Division of the Nigerian
army. Report says many of the attackers were killed by the Nigerians troops.
2. President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday said
he challenged the nation’s past elections because he wanted the country to be
set free, even as he said it was part of the yearnings for change.
3. The election tribunal looking into the matters of the
just concluded Rivers State election has granted a substituted service against
the governor-elect, Nyesom Wike after he failed several times to receive the
court’s paper in person. The option granted is to paste the document on the
wall of his house or at the PDP Secretariat.
4. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has alleged that the
APC Spokesperson, Lai Muhammed if not cautioned, will deceive the country into
chaos following his persistent lies. According to the PDP Publicity Secretary,
Olisa Metuh, an apology was expected from Lai after Alhaji Joda debunked his
false statement and denied that his committee was being frustrated by the
PDP-led Presidency, but he never did.
5. President Jonathan Approves N31bn New Project Roads for
Niger Delta. Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved four different
roads totaling N31billion for the Niger Delta. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs,
Steve Oru, disclosed this at the end of the weekly FEC meeting presided over by
President Goodluck Jonathan. Oru said the four roads are in Bayelsa, Ondo and
Delta States
6. Report says some governors of the Peoples Democratic
Party on Tuesday night attended a meeting held by some of their All
Progressives Congress counterparts who are fronting for the emergence of former
Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki as the Senate President. The report says
that the meeting which held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja had 65
senators-elect in attendance. However, the PDP governors in attendance were
Godswill Akpabio, Theodore Orji and Sam Egwu.
7. A 24-hours curfew has been imposed on Maiduguri, the
Borno State capital by the state government and the military following the
attack on some parts of the capital city by the ‘ruthless’ Boko Haram
insurgents.
8. The Senate on Wednesday made a u-turn on their plan to
override President Goodluck Jonathan’s veto on the Fourth Alteration Bill 2015
which seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution. According to the lawmakers, it was
important to suspend any further deliberation on the matter as law abiding
people by obeying a Supreme Court decision that the status quo be maintained on
the matter.
9. An Abuja High Court presided by Justice S. B. Belgore has ordered former Anambra State Governor, Chief Jim Nwobodo, to vacate his rented apartment in Maitama District, Abuja and relinquish same to the owner, Adin-Miles International Limited. This follows Nwobodo’s inability to pay his rent after expiration.
