Nigeria Women Football League board has pulled the plug on the matches of the women league, until the Super Falcons return to Nigeria from the 2015 Women World Cup in Canada.
The Falcons flew out yesterday to kick start their preparations for the WWC with 14 local players making up the list of 21. Rivers Angels have 10 of the players in the squad, Delta Queens have two, while Oshogbo and Ibom queens have one respectively.
In a release in Abuja, the Secretary of the League Board Isaac Ajisafe said: “In consideration of Nigeria’s participation in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, we wish to inform all Women League clubs that the NWFL after due consultations has decided to stop the Women League temporarily with effect from May 20, 2015and throughout the period of the Women’s World Cup. The League will resume after the Super Falcons return to Nigeria.”
Continuing, the scribe stated: “Please be informed that the decision is imperative so as to allow clubs, players and officials and all football -loving Nigerians to actively support the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the team’s quest to win the 2015 FIFA World Cup, and moreso, that most of the players playing in the League will definitely feature for Nigeria in the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Falcons captain Evelyn Nwabuoko and Francisca Ordega are expected to join the team in Canada, after their teams refused them permission to join the Falcons in Abuja.
